London Drugs In-Store Recycling

We are pleased to offer our customers a convenient place to drop off items for recycling (any one of our 72 stores) and will gladly take back electronics and appliances purchased at London Drugs for responsible recycling.

On items not purchased at London Drugs, recycling fees will apply to offset recycling costs. We gladly waive these fees if the item was purchased at London Drugs and you have the receipt.

Note: Our recycling service is designed to handle items that are at the end of their usable life. Packaging Recycling Program

London Drugs is Canada's only major retailer to offer a packaging recycling program, where customers can leave the packaging at our customer service desks as they leave with their purchases, from perfume boxes and cardboard packaging for toothpaste to styrofoam from a microwave purchase or a boxed appliance. Packaging, including styrofoam peanuts, is recycled, and appliances go to London Drugs' e-waste recycling partner, where they are broken down into recyclable parts.

E-Waste Recycling Program

Customers can bring in their old electronic items and appliances that were originally purchased at London Drugs for recycling. On items not purchased at London Drugs, recycling fees will apply to offset recycling costs. (Unless a replacement item with an equal or greater recycling fee value is purchased from London Drugs at the time of drop-off) This includes televisions, computers, printers, monitors, VCRs and virtually any electronic appliance that we sell.

Safe for you and the environment

We are one of the only computer recycling options where your valuable personal data is cleaned from your hard drives before they are destroyed and recycled. So your data won’t fall into the wrong hands and your computer won’t add to the landfill.

Small Appliance Recycling

London Drugs will accept for recycling any small appliance that was purchased at one of our stores. (Recycling fees apply, but as with electronics, we gladly waive these fees if the item was purchased at London Drugs and you have the receipt, OR if a replacement item with an equal or greater recycling fee value is purchased from London Drugs at the time of drop-off.)

Rechargeable Battery Recycling Program

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) is a nonprofit, public service organization dedicated to rechargeable battery and cell phone recycling. A thermal recovery process reclaims the metals (nickel, iron, cadmium, lead, and cobalt) from the batteries and prepares them for use in new products such as new batteries and stainless steel. London Drugs offers convenient drop-off recycling for these products at every one of our stores. Cell phones collected through the Call2Recycle(TM) program will be recycled or refurbished and resold when possible, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting select charities.

For more information, call 1-877-2-RECYCLE or visit www.call2recycle.org.

Compact Fluorescent and Fluorescent Tube Recycling

After Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFL's) have spent their long lives helping reduce your electricity usage, they need to be disposed of properly. You can bring back your Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs and Fluorescent Light (FL) Tubes up to 4-foot lengths, to London Drugs for safe, responsible recycling.

Simply wrap your old bulbs carefully in a plastic bag (a box is even better) and drop them off at the Customer Service Counter, or preferably at the Receiving Department, of your local London Drugs store.

Bulbs are transported to our recycling partner, PROECO, where components are safely separated and the residuals are sent for recycling.

Inkjet Cartridge Refilling

For years, London Drugs has been offering a refill service for ink jet cartridges, offering customers the opportunity to reduce waste from disposable cartridges.

What happens during recycling?

Our recycling partner is responsible for recycling rechargeable batteries, styrofoam and e-waste (including plastic, CRT glass, wires, printed circuit board and metal) to their respective elements.

  • Rechargeable batteries are processed to recapture the various metals
  • Styrofoam pieces are melted and formed into a brick, which is reused for styrofoam in buildings
  • E-waste (i.e. Computers) is taken apart for plastics, metals, wires and printed circuit boards. These components are shipped to their respective recyclers
    • Plastics are chipped, melted and produced as plastic pellets, which will be part of a new ingredient for other plastic products (ice scrapers, picnic tables, etc)
    • Metals and wires are melted and become a new element for metal products (computer cases, snow shovels, etc)
    • Printed circuit boards are processed to recover the copper, lead, selenium, ceramic and other polymers

Our recycler is BC Government approved and certified in two ISO categories - ISO 14001 and ISO 9001-2000

All electronic products are recycled back to their basic components before being shipped. London Drugs works diligently to ensure that our electronic recyclables are not shipped to sub-standard offshore facilities.

Plastics

Plastic and bubble wraps and #4 plastic bags are collected for re-manufacture into plastic lumber (playgrounds) and compost bins.

Medication Returns Program

We accept expired or unused medications for safe disposal. The medications are safely incinerated, preventing them from entering landfills, sewers, and the environment at large.
